When Steichen made this photograph of sculptor Auguste Rodin, the two artists had already been friends for many years. This image was likely taken shortly before Rodin’s 1908 exhibition of drawings at the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession (January 2–21, 1908). At this time Steichen was living in Europe and serving as a scout for Alfred Stieglitz’s gallery, working to help Stieglitz the latest European modern art to put on view.
